Michigan Infrastructure Council’s Asset Management Champion Program
“We knew the strategic benefits of asset management could not be achieved in isolation — regionalized or captured in a single infrastructure silo.”
The Michigan Infrastructure Council (MIC) convened nearly 100 local, regional, and state leaders for the virtual kick-off of the Asset Management (AM) Champion Program on April 15, 2021.
The program welcomed a cohort of dedicated asset owners and managers to collaboratively develop knowledge around fundamental AM principles and their implementation, build awareness and become a resource for Michigan’s growing culture of AM, and establish community with peer leaders across the state.
“We knew the strategic benefits of asset management could not be achieved in isolation — regionalized or captured in a single infrastructure silo,” MIC Chairperson John Weiss said. “We knew we had to foster a community of ‘Champions’ to help us echo the message and build the competencies across peers and industry networks.”
Assess and progress
The AM Champion Program expands on the five topics of asset management to help communities assess and progress their AM proficiency. These topics, which were introduced in the 2020 launch of the MIC Asset Management Readiness Scale (AMRS), are:
- People and leadership
- Data and information
- Planning and decision-making
- Policy and governance
- External communication and knowledge sharing
Participants of the program receive 20 hours of educational content consisting of asynchronous learning modules, three 90-minute discussions facilitated by asset management experts, and peer-to-peer interactions.
The program will conclude in early June 2021, with a certificate of completion presented to each “AM Champion”. Several reunion activities are being planned annually to offer additional learning opportunities and continue growing the peer-to-peer network.
